What Is a SIP Calculator and How Does It Work?
A SIP calculator helps you estimate the future value of your Systematic Investment Plan in mutual funds. Think of it as a mutual fund return calculator and an investment calculator in one โ it covers SIP, lumpsum, step-up, and goal-based modes. Most online calculators ask you to assume a return rate (say 12%) and compute a theoretical projection. The problem: no fund delivers a fixed 12% every year. Our approach is different โ we pull actual month-by-month NAV data from AMFI records for major Indian mutual funds and simulate what would have happened in any real fund over any specific time period.
Why Use Real NAV Data Instead of Assumed Returns?
Equity markets are volatile. In 2020, the Nifty 50 fell 38% during the COVID crash and then recovered 85% in the next 12 months (source: NSE India historical data). An assumed-return calculator would have shown a smooth 12% line through this period โ completely misleading. Real NAV data captures the actual journey: the drawdowns, the recoveries, and the final outcome. This builds realistic expectations and better investment discipline. You see what your portfolio would have gone through, not just where it ends.

How SIP Unit Accumulation Works
Each monthly SIP installment buys units at that day's Net Asset Value. If the NAV is ₹50, your ₹10,000 buys 200 units. If the NAV drops to ₹40 next month, the same ₹10,000 buys 250 units. This is rupee cost averaging โ you automatically buy more units when markets are low and fewer when markets are high. Over a long period, this reduces the average cost per unit and smooths out market volatility. One of the best examples is the March 2020 COVID crash: investors who stayed disciplined saw their SIP units purchased at 30-40% lower NAVs, which generated exceptional returns when the market recovered.
SIP with Step-Up: The 10% Rule
Most salaried investors get 10-15% annual salary increases. If your SIP stays fixed at ₹10,000/month while your salary grows, your savings rate actually declines each year. A step-up SIP matches your investment growth to your income growth. For example, starting at ₹10,000/month with a 10% annual step-up means ₹11,000/month in year 2, ₹12,100 in year 3, and so on. Over 20 years, this approach can generate 2-3x more wealth than a fixed SIP โ not because of better returns, but because increasing contributions compound for longer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which SIP calculator is best?
The best SIP calculator is one that uses real mutual fund NAV data instead of assumed return rates. Our calculator at fundsipcalculator.com lets you simulate SIP returns for Indian mutual funds using actual historical performance data from AMFI. This gives you a realistic picture of how your investment would have grown โ including market ups and downs โ rather than a misleading straight-line projection.
What is a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP)?
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a method of investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals โ typically monthly. Instead of investing a lump sum, SIP allows you to spread your investment over time, benefiting from rupee cost averaging. When markets are low, your fixed amount buys more units; when markets are high, it buys fewer. Over the long term, this discipline reduces the impact of market volatility and helps build wealth consistently.
How do I calculate SIP returns?
To calculate SIP returns, you need to know your monthly investment amount, the duration, and the fund's NAV on each investment date. Each month's SIP buys units at that day's NAV. At the end, multiply your total units by the final NAV to get the portfolio value. The annualised return (XIRR) accounts for the timing of each cash flow. Our calculator does all of this automatically โ just pick a fund, set dates, and enter your SIP amount to see exact historical returns.
Can I download or share my SIP results?
Yes. After any calculation you can export your results as a PDF report, an Excel (XLSX) workbook with a year-wise or month-wise breakdown, or an editable Word (DOCX) document. You can also share a high-resolution image (PNG) of your results. A data toggle controls whether PDF, Excel and DOCX exports use yearly or monthly granularity. All files are generated locally in your browser โ nothing is uploaded, so your data stays private.
Which mutual fund is best for a SIP?
The best mutual fund for a SIP depends on your investment horizon and risk tolerance. For a 5-year goal, flexi cap funds like Parag Parikh Flexi Cap or HDFC Flexi Cap with consistent rolling returns are a strong starting point. A Nifty 50 index fund adds a low-cost, zero-manager-risk core. For longer horizons (10+ years), adding mid and small cap allocations can boost growth โ but increases interim volatility. Our guide to the best mutual funds for a 5-year SIP covers category-wise picks and model portfolios. Always compare annualised returns (XIRR) rather than absolute gains, and consult a SEBI-registered adviser before investing.
How does the mutual fund return calculator work?
Our mutual fund return calculator replays your actual SIP or lumpsum instalments against the fund's real historical NAV on each investment date, then computes the current portfolio value and your annualised XIRR (Extended Internal Rate of Return). Unlike assumed-return calculators that draw a smooth 12% line, it captures real crashes, recoveries, and the volatility your investment would have actually experienced. You can export results to PDF, Excel, or Word for your records. Read our detailed mutual fund return calculator guide for a walkthrough of every output: invested amount, current value, absolute gain, and XIRR.
